  • Portland's sustainability efforts have received Bronze and Silver Certifications from Sustainable CT. 

  • The Board of Education is adding solar panels to the Brownstone Intermediate School. 

  • The Town is in the final stages of the approval process to add solar panels to reclaimed land at the Transfer Station on Sand Hill Road. 

  • In May 2021 the BOE and Town entered into a 4 year agreement with Eversource to reduce energy use at Valley View, Brownstone Intermediate and Portland High School. Actions include upgrading lighting, reducing refrigeration costs, and reducing heating and energy usage.

  • Portland has adopted a Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. The 2021 Lower Connecticut River Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan begun in December 2019 a with a visit to town to review existing plans with municipal staff, regional public meetings with presentations, a web-based survey, and opportunities to comment on the draft plan into the winter of 2020 followed.
